One of the softest knit fabrics made — what it is, why it feels the way it does, and how to order it without the classic mistakes.
Coral fleece (珊瑚绒) is the fabric behind most of the softest blankets, bathrobes and loungewear you have ever touched. It is a knitted fabric made from ultra-fine polyester yarn, brushed into a short, dense, silky pile. Its name comes from the fine, coral-like density of the brushed surface — and that density is exactly what makes it feel soft in a way heavier fabrics cannot match.
Why coral fleece feels so soft
Ultra-fine yarn — coral fleece is knitted from micro-denier polyester (much finer than standard fleece yarn), which is what creates the silky, non-scratchy touch.
Dense short pile — the brushing process raises a short, even pile across the surface. Short pile means less fiber breakage, which is why good coral fleece sheds far less than cheap long-pile plush.
Weight without bulk — a 280 gsm coral fleece blanket feels substantial and warm, yet is light enough to fold into a small gift bag.

How to choose the right GSM
GSM (grams per square meter) is the weight spec you will always quote. As a practical guide:
230–280 gsm — the sweet spot for everyday blankets and throws; warm without being heavy.
290–350 gsm — heavy winter blankets, premium robes, pet beds that need structure.
Also quote width (common widths are 150–260 cm) — it changes cost per meter significantly.
Quality points to check with the mill
Shedding — cheap coral fleece sheds lint, especially after washing. Ask whether the pile has been stabilized (heat-set) and whether the mill has a shedding test for the lot.
Color fastness — for printed or dyed coral fleece, ask for wash fastness and rubbing fastness reports for the specific lot.
Printing — coral fleece takes digital and transfer prints well; for gradients and photorealistic patterns, digital printing is the standard route.
Hand-feel sample — GSM alone does not tell the hand feel. Always request a physical swatch before bulk.
What coral fleece is used for
Blankets & throws — by far the biggest use; gift blankets, season throws, bedding accessories.
Bathrobes & loungewear — the absorbency and softness make it a classic robe fabric.
Baby & kids' products — soft, no scratchy pile, gentle on sensitive skin.
Pet blankets & pet beds — soft and warm, easy to wash; a favorite for pet products.
Sleepwear & home textiles — pajamas, blankets, cushions.
Coral fleece vs its neighbors
vs polar fleece (摇粒绒) — polar fleece has a pebbly, granular surface and is tougher; coral fleece is smoother, softer and more luxurious to touch.
vs shumian fleece (舒棉绒) — shumian is an even finer, silkier development of the same family; coral fleece is the classic, widely available choice.
vs lamb wool fleece (羊羔绒) — lamb wool has a curled, fluffier pile; coral fleece is shorter, denser and smoother.
