The fluffiest fabric in the plush family — what it is, what to spec, and how to order it without the classic mistakes.
Lamb wool fleece (羊羔绒) is the fabric behind the fluffiest winter blankets and the warmest-looking pet beds on the market — a knitted polyester pile with tight, curled fibers that imitate lambswool at a fraction of the price. Before you order, there is one thing every buyer should know: despite the name, lamb wool fleece from Chinese mills is almost always 100% polyester. It looks like wool, it fluffs like wool, but it is a man-made fiber with wool's warmth and none of wool's itch, shrinkage or price tag. Call it "wool" on your label and you will have a compliance problem in the EU and US — call it faux or wool-look fleece and you have one of the most commercial winter fabrics available.
The fluff is engineered, not grown. Lamb wool fleece is knitted from fine polyester yarn, then brushed and curled in finishing so the surface forms tight, springy spirals. That curled pile traps still air, which is what makes the fabric feel warm without weight. Two finishing steps decide the quality of the curl:
| vs coral fleece (珊瑚绒) | Coral fleece has a short, dense, silky pile — smooth and elegant. Lamb wool fleece is curled and fluffier, with a deeper pile and a cozier, more distinctly "winter" look. |
| vs polar fleece (摇粒绒) | Polar fleece has a pebbly, technical surface — tougher and quicker to dry. Lamb wool fleece is softer-looking and more decorative; choose polar for hard wear, lamb wool for looks and warmth. |
| vs faux shearling (仿羊羔绒) | Faux shearling carries a longer pile on a suede-style backing, imitating shearling sheepskin. Lamb wool fleece has tighter, shorter curls — lighter, easier to care for, and the more common choice for blankets. |
Lamb wool fleece is usually ordered at the heavier end of the plush range — most blankets and throws run roughly 260–350 gsm, and common roll widths are 150–260 cm. GSM and width decide the price per meter, but they do not tell you the look: pile height and curl tightness are what make one lamb wool fleece look like a premium throw and another like a doormat. Always confirm the pile with a physical swatch before you commit to bulk.
Lamb wool fleece is easy care but needs gentler treatment than flat fleeces: machine wash cold or warm on a gentle cycle with mild detergent, no bleach, and dry on low heat or air-dry flat. Do not iron the pile — heat flattens the curls permanently — and avoid fabric softener build-up, which coats the fibers and dulls the fluff. If a customer's blanket flattens in use, a quick shake or a light comb restores the pile.
To get an accurate FOB quote fast, send: end use, GSM, width, the pile look you want (a reference photo of curl tightness helps), colors and quantity. Dyed and finished lamb wool fleece fabric typically starts around 100–200 kg per color; ask about stock colors if your quantity is small. Fabric samples are free, courier cost is usually credited against the first order, and production typically runs 15–30 days after sample approval. Never approve bulk on one swatch — run a pre-production sample, wash it, and keep it sealed as your reference. For more on minimums and small orders, see our fabric MOQ guide.
