How to put your own brand on plush fleece and pet blankets — the OEM vs private label difference, what sampling and MOQs really cost, and the questions to vet a mill before you commit.
If you are launching a pet brand or a throw blanket line, the fastest route to a product you own is deciding between OEM (made to your specification) and private label (your branding on a construction the mill already runs). For plush fleece and pet blankets, this fork decides your sampling budget, your minimums and how much design control you keep.
Both put your brand on the finished product, but they start at different points. In an OEM program you define the product — fabric type, GSM, width, construction, finish — and the mill builds it to your specification. That gives you full control over what makes your product different in the market, but it also means more sampling rounds and higher minimums, because a new construction has to be set up and a custom fabric has to be sourced or dyed before anything cuts. In a private label program you pick from constructions the mill already produces — say a coral fleece blanket at a set GSM in a set size — and customize it with color, trim, labels and packaging. Because the base product is already in production, lead times are shorter and minimums are usually lower.
In practice most mills sit somewhere between the two: a "stock-plus" private label product you can adjust in color, trim or GSM, or a light OEM build pulled from a fabric and construction library rather than engineered from scratch (Memo Textile). Ask a mill openly which model fits your reference — a good factory will tell you which route saves you money.
Whichever route you choose, the workflow is the same shape: brief, sample, approve, produce. The industry-standard sequence is:
To get those dates roughly right: OEM programs typically run 45–60 days including sampling rounds, while private label runs closer to 30–45 days from a confirmed sample (Memo Textile). A realistic first-order timeline from brief to stock on your side is closer to 12–16 weeks once you count samples, production and ocean freight (SourceBridge).
The biggest misunderstanding in sourcing is that a minimum is per order. It is per style AND per colour (SourceBridge). If a mill quotes 500 kg or 300 pieces, that is 500 kg or 300 pieces of one construction in one colourway — not six styles spread across four colours. Request the MOQ per style and per colour explicitly, and ask what the surcharge is to go below it.
On top of that, fabric minimums sit underneath garment minimums (SourceBridge). For plush fleece and pet blankets this is the point most buyers miss: a custom-dyed or custom-knitted fabric carries its own minimum in kilograms or metres, and that often pushes the finished-goods MOQ up even when the sewing line is flexible. At GRC we quote fabric minimums separately for this reason — a custom-dyed coral or lamb wool fleece typically starts around 100–200 kg per colour, while stock or in-stock colours can ship in much smaller lots. If you need to stay far below a custom minimum, ask about stock fabric and blank options: choosing a construction the mill already holds is the single most effective way to lower your minimum, more than any negotiation (SourceBridge).
When the sample arrives, check it against the brief rather than just holding it up. Weigh the fabric and compare the GSM and hand feel to your reference. Wash and dry it the way an end customer would, then re-measure for shrinkage. Hold the colour against your Pantone or reference under daylight, not only shop lighting. Check seams, hems and stitch density on sewn products. Send back a written list of every deviation — a factory that gets it right on the second pass is one you can work with. The approved sample becomes the production standard, and a good mill keeps a sealed copy of it (SourceBridge).
At GRC Textile — a plush and fleece manufacturer in Changshu, China — we run both models across coral fleece, lamb wool fleece, faux shearling, flannel and our pet blanket range. Tell us whether you want a private label base product (fastest, lowest minimums) or an OEM build, send a reference photo, and give us your quantity, target GSM and delivery date. We will tell you honestly which route costs less and what minimum applies — starting with a physical swatch before you commit to anything.
